Representative Bileca Endorsed by Miami Herald
This dramatically redrawn district pits Republican Rep. Michael Bileca, currently the incumbent in District 117, against Democrat Jeffrey Solomon, who ran an unsuccessful race for the House two years ago. Given that the two candidates disagree on practically everything, voters can’t complain that they don’t have a distinct choice.
Mr. Bileca, who’s finishing his first term, calls himself a proud conservative and has a record to match. He’s an outspoken advocate of charter schools and proponent of the “parent-trigger” bill that would make it easier to convert low-performing public schools into charter schools. Dr. Solomon calls that a bad approach to fixing a system that has traditionally served society well. He says education is his priority issue and that he would fight further efforts to promote charter schools.
They differ also on Gov. Rick Scott’s decision to keep Florida out of the Medicaid portion of the federal healthcare-reform law, which will mean less money for the state. “You’d like everyone to be held harmless,” Rep. Bileca said, “but you can’t.” Dr. Solomon calls it a terrible decision — as have we — and says the Legislature needs to veto the governor’s decision to reduce the number of Floridians who can’t get basic healthcare.
Mr. Bileca says that despite his conservative approach, he worked in a bipartisan way in the House to promote his issues. His task is to convince new voters in District 115, which has more Democrats than the one in which he was elected in 2010, that he will represent all of his constituents, regardless of the party line in Tallahassee. While we like Dr. Solomon’s ideas, we believe Rep. Bileca should have an opportunity to show he can adapt to the changed political circumstances.
For House District 115, The Herald recommends MICHAEL BILECA.

Representative Bileca makes Story in the Sun-Sentinel
If state Rep. Michael Bileca has his way, the special treat some Miami students got recently will become rather commonplace throughout Florida in years to come – or so we should all hope.
Last week, Bileca arranged for a Benjamin Franklin re-enactor to pay visits to four public schools in his district. While there, "Dr. Franklin" regaled students with stories from his life as a diplomat, inventor, printer and founding father. He recited a number of his famous sayings, including, "A penny saved is a penny earned."........

Bileca Helps South Florida Students Celebrate Freedom
If State Rep. Michael Bileca has his way, the special treat some Miami students got last week will become rather commonplace throughout Florida in years to come. Or so we should all hope.
Last week, Bileca arranged for a Benjamin Franklin re-enactor to pay visits to four public schools in his district. While there, “Dr. Franklin” regaled students with stories from his life as a diplomat, inventor, printer, and founding father. And he recited a number of his famous sayings including, “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
In addition, “Dr. Franklin” helped lead a fun quiz game called, “R U Smarter than a Franklin County 5th Grader?” This quiz game, which was first played along Florida’s “forgotten coast” earlier this year, featured a number of questions about the life and times of America’s founders.
All in all, it provided a fitting way for these south Florida students to commemorate Celebrate Freedom Week, an often-overlooked feature of the fall school calendar in Florida.
Bileca, a first-term legislator and second-generation American, wants to raise the profile of this important commemoration. In addition to sponsoring the “Ben Franklin” visits, Bileca arranged for older students in his district to receive copies of Celebrate Freedom, a supplemental curriculum produced by the News-in-Education department at the Sun-Sentinel. This award-winning curriculum helps students understand America’s founding principles, drawing heavily from a key passage in the Declaration of Independence.
Bileca believes that helping students learn more about our nation’s founding will help raise their woeful performance on civics and history standardized tests. And that it will help students better appreciate what makes America exceptional.
It’s hard to argue with these ideas. Let’s hope that other Florida legislators follow Bileca’s lead.

Orlando Zapata Tamayo's sacrifice
Orlando Zapata Tamayo's death is a tragedy for a man and his loved ones. It is also the story of our endless pursuit to live free and peacefully. This was an unnecessary death brought on by a dictatorial regime that continues to seek absolute control of its people. What they do not know is that this pursuit is impossible. The human spirit strives for freedom and is eventually invincible. No totalitarian regime can survive, though Cuba's has endured far too long. As the son of immigrants who left a communist regime to seek liberty and opportunity in the United States, I am deeply saddened by the loss of this courageous man. I am equally inspired by his legacy. The chronicle of his death, his mother's pursuit of justice, and the moral high ground which he maintained throughout is an inspiration to all of us. To Orlando Zapata Tamayo and his loved ones, God Bless You through these difficult times. To all of us, pursue the high ground and strive to keep freedom as the mantle of our ideals.
